Why your leadership mindset matters and how to develop it

“Leaders don’t create followers. They create more leaders.” Tom Peters

Authentic and effective leadership goes far beyond the title of ‘leader’; it’s also a mindset that shapes your vision and fuels your actions. A leadership mindset is a way of thinking that makes leaders effective at inspiring their teams and achieving strong performance outcomes.

Whether you’re an emerging leader, you have years of experience behind you, or you're keen to level up in your role, your ability to lead effectively hinges on the strength of your leadership mindset.

Let’s examine what it means to have a leadership mindset, why it matters, and how to develop it.

What is a leadership mindset?

A leadership mindset is a foundational belief system and framework that supports you in leading with purpose and impact.

Leaders who embody this mindset can make tough decisions, stay calm under pressure, and navigate difficult situations with emotional intelligence. This is partly thanks to their use of authentic communication and clear vision for their company's work.

Beyond this, a leadership mindset can be cultivated within teams and individual employees to benefit the company or organization.

This is a holistic approach to leadership that includes some key elements:

  1. Nurturing development - A leadership mindset focuses on personal growth and the growth of those you lead. It emphasizes continuous learning, self-improvement, and fostering the potential of others.

  2. Ownership and accountability - Leaders with this mindset take ownership of their responsibilities and hold themselves accountable for their actions and decisions. They lead by example, walk the talk, and allow others to flourish.

  3. Emotional intelligence - A leadership mindset is based upon emotional intelligence. This is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one’s emotions and the emotions of others. It’s an essential skill for building strong team relationships and fostering effective communication.

  4. Resourcefulness - Effective leaders approach situations with a growth mindset and are willing to think outside the box to find creative solutions.

  5. Genuine interest in others’ success - A leadership mindset includes taking an interest in the success of those around you. Whether this is supporting development opportunities, acknowledging efforts and achievements, providing constructive feedback, or showing gratitude for a job well done, your genuine interest can boost morale and nurture the continued development of your team.

Why your leadership mindset matters

Recent years have brought about a workplace revolution, changing where and how we work.

We’ve also seen changes in how employees are developing as leaders. Entry-level employees increasingly prioritize workplaces with a clear vision for the future, paired with genuine and authentic communication from the C-suite.

A 2023 survey of over 250 C-suite leaders and 400 entry-level employees across the United States identified how companies communicate and develop their leadership mindset to nurture strong leaders, achieve the company’s goals, and support long-term business success.

This survey found commonly held views regarding the characteristics and traits of both successful companies and effective leaders:

Most participants identified that they saw the characteristics of a successful company as being:

  • Quality

  • Reliability

  • Integrity, and

  • Innovation

They were also in agreement on the top traits that make an effective leader, including:

  • Trustworthiness

  • Intelligence

  • Vision

  • Humility, and

  • Responsibility

The study also confirmed that everyone benefits when a company promotes its leadership mindset.

“Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.” Sam Walton

Benefits of a leadership mindset

Whether you’re supporting a small team or a multinational company, a leadership mindset offers many benefits, including:

  1. Informed decision-making - By possessing a clear vision of the organization’s direction, you can align your decisions with the organization’s goals to make informed and strategic decisions with greater confidence.

  2. Resilience under pressure - As a leader, you must navigate challenging situations. A leadership mindset deepens emotional intelligence, supporting you in staying calm and composed in high-pressure situations.

  3. Effective communication - Authentic communication is a hallmark of a leadership mindset. Leaders with this mindset foster open and transparent workplace communication, strengthening employee trust and collaboration.

  4. Empowering others - Leadership is about inspiring and developing individuals and teams to be their most engaged, motivated, and satisfied selves. From a leadership mindset, leaders recognize the potential in others and provide mentorship and guidance to develop future leaders.

Developing a leadership mindset

“Leadership should be focused on extending the ladder of opportunity for everyone.” Justin Trudeau

Some of the cornerstone qualities of having a leadership mindset are:

  1. Embracing self-awareness includes understanding your values, strengths, and areas for growth. Self-awareness supports you in leading with authenticity and communicating openly with others.

  2. Cultivating a growth mindset encourages resilience, continuous learning, growth, and improvement and is essential for modern leadership.

  3. Defining a clear and inspiring vision is essential to effective leadership. This vision should align with the business's goals and motivate and inspire you and your team. Once defined, the vision should be shared regularly to align everyone to a common goal and foster a sense of purpose.

  4. Leading by example means understanding that your actions set the tone for your team. You should lead by example by demonstrating the qualities and behaviors you expect from others.

  5. Seeking feedback and continuing to learn - Seek feedback from your team, peers, and mentors. Use it to continue developing a culture of open communication within the workplace.

  6. Inspiring and empowering others - Leadership is about empowering others to reach their potential. Acknowledge individual and team achievements, provide mentorship, and have fun together.

Remember, your leadership success is intertwined with your team's success.

Developing your leadership mindset can help you to:

  • Lead with integrity even when maneuvering between opposing agendas

  • Communicate with care even when the pressure is on

  • Set clear expectations and hold boundaries even with your bosses

  • Not just offer support but also ask for it, even in a competitive environment
